Swirlsnap’s favourite Scorbus fics on AO3
- Let Go by sebastianL
Let Go is hands-down the most impressive Scorbus fic ever written on AO3, if not the most impressive Scorbus fic PERIOD. The characterisation of each character, both major and minor, was so well-considered, impressive and realistic. Albus’ constant internal monologuing was all at once: hilarious, heartbreaking, and real as fuck. The progression of Scorbus’ eventual relationship, and their various trials and tribulations, were indescribably well-written. Every moment had me on the edge of my seat and/or kicking and screaming.
And that hardly begins to touch on the intricacies of the plot. From the very beginning of this 190k word fic, SebastianL crafts a web of details and clues that culminate in impressive reveals, and great emotional pay-off. To spoil anything would be a disservice to any future readers, so all I have to say is (if you haven’t already read Let Go) is: READ IT!
- A Love Like Old Boots by Thealmostrhetoricalquestion
A Love Like Old Boots managed to break my heart and glue it back together again in as much as 20k words. Tender and disquieting, but so, so hopeful and optimistic at the same time, this is one of my favourite fics for the Scorbus pairing. The rift that had grown between the two boys, and the careful mending of that rift as men was so visceral that I felt like it mended something in me.
- Sugar Dust by gobstoneswithhector
Have you ever read a fic so sweet that it made your teeth ache? I don’t even know where to start with this one; Sugar Dust is an endearing 20k word story from the perspective of Scorpius that never met Albus in Hogwarts - he was homeschooled. The meet cute between this adorably magnetic couple in a small town culminates in the most blindingly cute way. Sugar Dust is practically what the plot of a Scorbus romantic comedy film would be. Super cute!
- The Pumpkin Peddler by Thealmostrhetoricalquestion
I always, always come back to this fic whenever I need a Scorbus-themed pick-me-up. The Pumpkin Peddler is the perfect 10k bite-sized Scorbus fic. The worldbuilding is so whimsical and perfect, it really has that Studio Ghibli-feel of other-worldliness, while still staying grounded in its relationships. I haven’t read a fic like this before finding The Pumpkin Peddler, and I still haven’t found another since. Super original and adorable!
- You and I by shiftylinguini
In You and I, shiftylinguini manages to expertly capture the sublime beginnings, stormy seas, and fairytale ending of Scorbus’ relationship over the course of over a decade. An incredibly impressive 31k word undertaking, I absolutely fell in love with shiftylinguini’s version of Scorpius and Albus, and their interactions that were just so clearly full of intimacy. I especially love the bathtub scene; no spoilers, but I think I’ve come back and reread this fic specifically for that scene about 15 times.
- Purposeful Accident by [a now-orphaned account that I won’t name out of respect for the author]
Purposeful Accident manages to toe the line between seat-gripping and sickeningly sweet for the entire 15k word ride. If you had seen me read this fic for the first time, you would have seen a person smile like an absolute maniac for about 30 minutes straight. The slow build of Scorpius and Albus’ relationship over the course of the fic was wonderful to witness, and I especially loved Lily in this one. She’s so under-utilised in fics that it’s downright criminal!
- A Dream We Share by Tonks914
Another delightfully short-and-sweet fic, A Dream We Share managed to make me kick and scream and squeal like a little girl for the entirety of its 4k words. I can hardly gush about this fic without spoilers for the ending, but what an utterly charming surprise it was!
- there must have been some supernova i missed by thumbsupemoji
DO YOU WANT A CHARMING 30K FIC TO READ? (yes, you shout!) DO YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOU’RE EXPERIENCING A HEART ATTACK FOR AN HOUR DUE TO THE SHEER AMOUNT OF SWEETNESS IN THIS FIC? (god yes, you cry impassionately!) Then look literally no further than this thoroughly incredible fic by thumbsupemoji! Scorpius as a narrator was an absolute delight to behold, and I loved his slow (or not-so-slow, really) realisation of his feelings for one Albus Potter. One of my favourite aspects of this particular fic is how true it stays to the characterisation that Cursed Child provides; I felt like the dorky Scorpius and somewhat sullen Albus that I saw on stage really turned up in this fic. I honestly can’t sing thumbsupemoji’s praises enough!
- Where The Apples Grow In Winter by Thealmostrhetoricalquestion
Thealmostrhetoricalquestion’s Where The Apples Grow In Winter felt like the cold air on your face when you walk outside on a Winter’s day. It felt like the person you love most in the world giving you a tight, warm hug. So soft, so sweet, and so impossibly soothing. 14k words of two boys finding love in each other in the most charming way.
There are totally more Scorbus fics that I love just as much as the ones mentioned above, but I couldn’t bring myself to write anymore. How the hell do you fic writers write over 10k words? I’m actually in awe. I hope that whoever is reading this is able to find as much joy in these fics as I clearly did!
